Portugal has become one of the most sought-after destinations for remote workers worldwide. Excellent climate, cost of living lower than Western Europe, widely spoken English and EU access have made Lisbon and Porto into reference hubs for digital nomads and remote professionals.

Types of remote work available

There are three distinct situations for working remotely in Portugal:

  • Employee of a Portuguese company working fully remote — Portuguese contract, Social Security contributions, legal holidays, holiday and Christmas bonuses
  • Employee of a foreign company working remote — More tax complexity, may require double taxation agreements
  • Freelancer / digital nomad — Self-employed working for international clients while living in Portugal

The Digital Nomad Visa

Since 2022, Portugal has a specific visa for digital nomads — the D8 Visa. Main requirements:

  • Minimum monthly income of €3,480 (4x the Portuguese minimum wage in 2025)
  • Remote work for a company or clients outside Portugal
  • Valid health insurance in Portugal
  • Proven accommodation in Portugal
  • Clean criminal record

The visa is initially issued for 4 months and renewable for up to 2 years. After 5 years of legal residence, you can apply for permanent residency.

The NHR / IFICI tax regime

Portugal's Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime was a major tax attraction for years — a flat 20% rate on Portuguese work income and exemption on foreign income, for 10 years. In 2024 it was reformed into the IFICI (Incentivo Fiscal à Investigação Científica e Inovação), now more restricted to technology, research and arts fields.

If you qualify, the tax savings can be very significant compared to countries like the UK, Germany or France. It's worth consulting an accountant specialised in expats in Portugal before making decisions.
