How to prepare for a job interview: complete guide
From researching the company to the most common questions — everything you need to know before the big day.
You've got the interview. Now the real work begins. The difference between candidates who get offers and those who don't is rarely talent — it's preparation. This guide gives you a concrete plan to prepare for any job interview.
1. Research the company thoroughly
Walking into an interview without knowing what the company does is a mistake that eliminates candidates immediately. Before you go in, you should know:
- The product or service — What do they sell? To whom? How do they make money?
- The market and competitors — What sector do they operate in? Who are the main competitors?
- Culture and values — Read the "About Us", the company's LinkedIn and Glassdoor reviews
- Recent news — New hires, investments, product launches
- Your interviewer — Search on LinkedIn to understand their background and find common ground
2. The STAR method for great answers
Most behavioural questions should be answered using the STAR method:
- Situation — What was the context?
- Task — What was your role and objective?
- Action — What did you specifically do?
- Result — What was the impact? (with numbers if possible)
Prepare 5 to 6 STAR stories before the interview that you can adapt to different questions. Use experiences that demonstrate different competencies: leadership, conflict resolution, working under pressure, innovation, teamwork.
3. The most common questions — and how to answer them
"Tell me about yourself"
This isn't an invitation to recount your CV. It's an opening to present your professional narrative. Frame it as: who you are professionally, what brought you here and why you're excited about this opportunity. 90 seconds maximum.
"What's your biggest weakness?"
Don't say "I'm a perfectionist" — it's a transparent cliché. Choose a real weakness that isn't critical for the role, and show how you're working on it: "I tend to want to get everything perfect before sharing. I'm working on this by adopting more frequent reviews and shorter iterations."
"Why do you want to work here?"
Connect your genuine motivations to something specific about the company: the product, the mission, the team or the technology. Generic kills. Specific impresses.
"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
Show ambition but aligned with growth within the company. Avoid "I want your job" and also avoid "I don't know". Think about what genuinely motivates you and express that.
4. Dress code and presence
When in doubt, dress one level above the company's dress code. If it's casual, go business casual. If it's business casual, go business. For remote interviews: a simple shirt or blouse, neutral background, good front lighting and a clean microphone.
Arrive (or connect) 5 minutes early. Bring printed copies of your CV even if you've already sent it. Turn off phone notifications.
5. Questions you should ask
"Do you have any questions for us?" is your opportunity to show genuine interest and assess whether the company is right for you. Good questions:
- "What does the onboarding process look like for this position?"
- "What are the biggest challenges the team is currently facing?"
- "How is success defined in the first 6 months in this role?"
- "How would you describe the feedback culture on the team?"
Avoid asking about salary, holidays or benefits in the first interview — that comes later, when there's confirmed mutual interest.
6. The follow-up email
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Keep it brief (3 to 5 lines), personalised with something specific you discussed and reiterating your interest. Most candidates don't do this — it's an easy differentiator.
